Economic damage

Poorly planned development isn't regular growth - it hurts prosperity as it expands, while smart development is truly smart growth: Protecting what we have and adding to it. The Lake Simcoe Protection Act represents smart growth since it protects the natural heritage we enjoy while focusing development away from sensitive green spaces close to Lake Simcoe.

The Lake Simcoe area's tourism industry is currently worth $200 million a year, but depends to a large extent on a healthy Lake Simcoe and Nottawasaga River. Protecting Lake Simcoe and improving its water quality are essential to continued prosperity and employment from the local tourist economy.

The county is also home to more than 2,000 working farms that produce everything from famous produce to Christmas trees, quality meat and dairy products to hemp. We don't have to choose between thriving tourist, recreational and agricultural industries and growth, but do have to choose between the health of these industries and poorly planned growth. The Lake Simcoe Protection Act doesn't stop growth, but it focuses it away from the sensitive green spaces on which so much prosperity depends and towards existing urban boundaries where it makes more sense.
